Shop, Earn Rewards, and Support Global Humanitarian Projects…Sweet!

So, do any of you ever shop at Toys R Us,  Best Buy, Family Christian Stores, Kmart, the Gap, Target, Lowes, Walmart, or the Apple Store?

Do you buy products from Avon, Bath and Body Works, CVS,  the Vitamin Shoppe, or SAMS Club?

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t make purchases from at least one of these companies.  What if I told you that you could make your regular purchases from these and  a multitude of other stores while getting deals…..and more importantly, earning money to designate to a variety of global humanitarian projects?

Makes grocery shopping or buying replacement screws for your home improvement project seem alot more appealing, doesn’t it?

If you haven’t already met them, may I introduce you to Pure Charity, an organization that has partnered with hundreds of companies, that allows you to make purchases that send rewards to your own personal giving fund.  You can then use this fund to back projects around the world that are important to you….maybe  rescuing sex trafficked girls in Cambodia,  providing clean drinking water wells to countries around the world, or help start micro-businesses in Honduras.

Or, perhaps you have a heart for a specific humanitarian aid project or NGO and want to get them on the Pure Charity fundraising grid…there are options for that.

Better yet, Pure Charity also supports shopping local, so you can locate small businesses in your area that you can partner with to help grow them while you are raising money for worldwide needs.

Finally, that instant, visual gratification that all we Americans need….we can track our progress, where our money goes, and how our money has helped projects we are backing.  A little eye candy incentive, if you will.

I love this program because it is a super practical way for people like me, a busy mom of little ones, or others who can’t go and get involved in projects themselves, to have a chance to directly impact humanitarian needs around the world, and then be able to tangibly track results.   Pure Charity has almost made it too easy for us….we have to shop anyway, so why not make our dollars go further?

I urge you to check Pure Charity out, and beware Facebook friends, I will be doing a little stalking by sending you FB invites.  At least take a look at what Pure Charity has to offer before you pass up the invitation.

My Little Boy is 2 and Full Fridays Linkup

My littlest boy, Landon, just turned 2!.  He makes Fridays, and everyday, very full…both of love and fun, and mischief, as indicated by the pen markings on his face!  So blessed to have you, little man!

Full Fridays is a place to post about the joy and life your kids bring you, allowing others to join in with you. It’s the end of the week: set aside the chore list, the fix it list, and posts about deep topics. Write and share about the humorous and joy filled moments that remind you why it’s a blessing to be raising a family!

Linkytools is having a slight argument with my Paypal account, and this link will be back up and running soon.  Feel free to include post links in the comments section.

Yo Yo’s and Minas…and FULL FRIDAY Linkup!

Have you ever noticed that when you become a parent, while your child’s vocabulary expands, your own regresses, sometime permanently?

When we have babies, invariably we all start talking to them in ridiculous babble, and then when they become toddlers, we simplify our words and phrases so they can pick up concepts more easily.

For example, instead of telling my 1 year old that “it’s time to go to bed!”, I say “Time go bed!”.  Or, instead of “Can you lay down so Mommy can change your diaper?” I say, “Lay down Mommy change diaper.”

After long days with the kids and little adult interaction, I sometimes have to catch myself and make sure that I include prepositions and articles in my sentences when talking to my husband or friends.   “Hubby, I tired…make coffee.”

Then there are the words that developed with my first son, that will remain forever.  The word “bottle” will always be “ba ba“, which was instituted by my Aunt Carol.  Yogurt will always be “yo yo’s”,  and I never ask the kids if they want a banana anymore…they are now called “minas” thanks to my oldest son when he first started talking.

The funny thing is, as my boys are getting older, I keep using these words out of habit, and my kids are starting to correct me.  “Mom, it’s not called yo yo’s!  It’s yogurt!”

Dorky as I may sound, I love this word and phrase improvising.  It makes each family unique…I tell my boys to go sleepy-bye night night, while other families have their own way of saying goodnight.  It’s like our own special code that has developed up between all of us that belongs to us only.

How about you?  Does your family have any crazy words or phrases that have developed over time?  Share them or another great family moment by commenting or linking up in Full Fridays!

30 Second Dance Party with the Boys and FULL FRIDAYS Linkup

Untitled
Yesterday morning, as I was rushing to get dressed to get my 3 year old to preschool on time, I ran into my closet, grabbed a pair of jeans, and pulled them on.

I thought I was putting on my favorite pair of jeans, the ones that fit just right with room in all the right places, and was surprised to find that my jeans fit just a bit tighter.  At first I was paranoid…maybe those stress relieving chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwiches were catching up with me.

Then, I thought….wait, these jeans aren’t ones I wear everyday…could it be, that these are my skinny jeans that I haven’t been able to wear since getting pregnant with my third son almost three years ago?!

My husband was already working, so I ran into the boys room and hollered at them to try and read the size of my jeans as I folded down the back waistband.

1.  Fortunately, my boys are little and have no inhibitions about fulfilling dumb requests like this focusing around the vicinity of my rear end.

2.  I didn’t want to take the jeans off and check myself for fear that they might not actually come back on…maybe I was experiencing a very short case of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants phenomenon.

Low and behold, we located the size, and in fact, the jeans were a size smaller than I’ve been wearing for two years.  So, what happened next?

I busted into a 30 second dance party, which my boys happily joined in with!

Then, we frantically got loaded up into the car, racing off to preschool.  But, that one little moment made the rest of the day better, and it was so fun to have my three little guys get as excited about Mommy fitting into skinny jeans as I did.

Do you have any happy kid moments to share?  I’d love to read them!

November 4th – International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church

November 4th is the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. I know as well as anyone that it is easy to get caught up in our own lives, what is going on directly around us, and in our own country. However, let us remember that there are many, many Christians around the world suffering not just from the natural disasters and economic situations that befall us all, but for their faith and devotion to Jesus Christ.
Consider the following short video from Gospel for Asia, and ask God how you might have you pray and get involved in aiding the persecuted church throughout the world.  Even as suburban moms with little kids around our feet all day, Jesus has allowed us the privilege of fighting for others through prayer….a lesson I’m still learning and trying to improve upon.

ALLUME…Been There, Done That….Will Do It Again!

Allume Community

The third Allume (used to be known as Relevant) blogging conference is over, and can I just say that once again….it was AWESOME!

But then, what isn’t awesome about meeting amazing women with incredible God stories, being exposed to wisdom of long time mom bloggers (oh, and also the Problogger himself, who obviously isn’t a mom), connecting with new ministries that are reaching out to the world….and essential coffee and chocolate that makes every get together for women complete.

This past weekend was that recalibration that I needed, and though physically exhausting, it helped remind me of what my priorities really are.

How does any of this apply to you?

1. If you blog, or are even thinking about it, consider attending Allume next year because you will be blessed.

2. There will be giveaways in future posts. Who doesn’t like those? So, stay tuned….

My Social Media Fast for Lent

Lawton Chiles Facebook
It’s been a month since I’ve put up a blog post.

I really do have some good reasons, I swear!

The main reason was that I attempted a social media fast for Lent. (Notice I said, attempted.) Second, my 2 turning 3 year old attacked my computer keyboard for the upteenth time, basically laying it to rest with his last visit, tearing away 20 keys that I couldn’t get back on. It’s a real pain to try to type anything of significance when hoping that you’re fingers don’t slip off the tiny circles that reside under the plastic keys that pass pressure signals on to the CPU. Right now I’m making do on a cheapy keyboard accessory from Bed Bath and Beyond. Meh.

I digress. Back to Lent. I failed regarding social media. I managed to keep myself off Pinterest and Twitter with no problems, I only looked at a few blogs, but that stupid Facebook has its hooks in me. I dramatically reduced my time on it, but came no where near to eliminating it completely.

I’m really bothered by that. An addiction to Facebook says alot about me, much that I would rather just ignore.

You know how they say that people whose families tend to have alcoholic tendencies should just never drink? I think Facebook is the same for so many of us. In moderation, it can be a great, efficient way to stay connected with people. However, for those who are unaware of certain thought patterns they have or those who simply haven’t dealt with them and the lies from Satan they have believed, Facebook can feed into unhealthy tendencies by creating false realities and reducing relationships to a mere exchanging of surface level status updates.

Of course, this isn’t always the case, but I think it is certainy prevalent among FB users. Are those 300 friends I have really connected to me on a meaningful level? And really, is it possible to connect in any meaningful way with that many people?

Was my fast for Lent successful? Yes, and no. No, in that I obviously still engaged to some degree with the media. Yes, in that I realized how deep and unhealthy my current attachments to Facebook are. For me, Facebook allows a lazy way to have relationship….you just log people in and out when you desire. You can easily avoid or confront without consequences. For me, Facebook allows me to hang on to old ghosts in my mind….relationships from the past that I need to let go of, but for some reason can’t, and Facebook allows me the facade of believing that I am continuing those relationships.

I’m trying to decide currently what to do about Facebook….drop it completely, or just try to set really strict boundaries on my time there. And it concerns me when I get uncomfortable with the idea of just letting it go immediately. I’m sure Jesus has something to tell my heart about this.

How about you? How does social media affect your life? Is it an occasional interest, or are you FBing constantly and following the 2012 presidential campaign in real time on Twitter?

The Versatile Blogger Award

To my surprise, I was nominated by Taunya’s Place for the Versatile Blogger Award. I’m not sure I’m all that versatile, but I do jabber about alot of random stuff. Make sure to stop and visit her blog.

So, the deal with this award is that the recipient has to do two things:

1.  Share 7 things about themselves, and

2. Nominate 15 new blogs for the award.

Hmm….7 things about me?  That’s sort of an open-ended request…what to pinpoint?  Okay,here goes….

1.  After raising my boys, I’d like to get a masters degree and go into Marriage and Family Counseling from a Christian perspective.

2.  I tear up in almost every episode of The Biggest Loser.  It’s kind of pathetic, actually, but the show is inspiring, especially when people get to the root issues that are causing the symptom of obesity.

3.  When I was little, my great dream was to join the pro rodeo circuit.  I never got to do any rodeoing, and somehow ended up in suburban America.

4.  My husband and I are an internet success couple.  Somehow God brought us together despite our exceedingly boring online profiles and united the North and South (he’s from Michigan, I’m from Texas).

5.  Speaking of the North and South, I have family members who are still bitter over the Civil War.  Explain that one to me.  They were born almost a hundred years after the war.  Apparently states’ rights is really that big of an issue where I’m from.

6.  I’m addicted to books, and am usually reading at least 3-4 at a time.  I’m trying to read more fiction so that I can relieve my brain from the constant thinking caused by reading that many Christian living or parenting books at the same time.

7.  I could eat Kraft Mac and Cheese or any from of Thai curry for every meal, every day.  I don’t of course, I just could.

And now, for 15 newly discovered (by me) blogs that I think are just great….

1. The Creative Juices of Ariel
3. Running Rachel
3. Want What You Have
4. Living and Learning at Home
5. One Small Town Girl
6. Trailing After God
7. Growing Home
8. Princess Warrior Lessons
9. Yes They’re All Ours
10. Making Home
11. My God Given Mission Field
12. Muddled Moms and Mercy
13. A Slice of Homeschool Pie
14. The Holistic Homeschooler
15. Shared From Way Over Here
